What could be better than getting out of the city with that special someone ? A change of scenery is often exactly what you need to rekindle the romance and I firmly believe that you do not really know someone until you’ve travelled together. Taking your relationship out of its comfort zone by changing the milieu will tell you a lot about that person’s response to change, stressors and hours in transit.

We’ve made a list of our favourite spots to head to during February, and especially over Valentine’s weekend. So crank up the road trip tunes and make some memories!

Once Upon A Time

What better place to take your Prince Charming to than an actual castle in the Eastern Free State? The Castle in Clarens is a mere 317 km from OR Tambo, and this fairytale castle is the stuff of dreams. It is situated just outside of the picturesque village of Clarens on a secluded farm, meaning you’ll have the entire area to yourself. Both the Prince’s Room and Rapunzel’s Room overlook the stunning Eastern Free State landscape, while the Chamber of Angels lounge area on the ground floor is perfect for lounging in the Free State summer with a glass of wine.

Wondering what you can do in Clarens? Head to our post on Clarens Getaways.

Eco Luxury

Looking for that no signal / no wifi escape to spend some quality time with the one you love? Look no further than Copia Eco Cabins in the Botrivier region. These off-the-grid cabins are beautifully decorated, cosy and worth all the Valentines snuggles. They offer a choice of three cabins; namely the Copia, the Lone Tree and the Waterval. Made from recycled containers, each cabin is also equipped with a fireplace and hot tub. Everyone knows there is nothing us Saffers like more than a cosy fire!

These cabins are 28 km from the Elgin Railway Market and definitely worth a stop!

Small Town Zen

I love heading to a small town! And McGregor, just outside of Robertson, is my absolute favourite. This small little dirt road town has so much character that it makes for a perfect romantic destination, and the Le Bonheur Guest House has stolen my heart. This quaint little spot implemented eco-architecture when designing and building their little piece of heaven. Think hot water underfloor heating, induction geysers, and water-wise practices. Not to mention the fact that it is also beautifully decorated and features a pool in the backyard!

We also included McGregor in our Route 62 stops list.

Modern Hideaway

Maybe this Valentine’s Day, Mr Right just needs a little hint…. If you’ve been spending any time on Instagram lately, you would’ve seen the beautiful Bosjes wedding venue, just outside of Worcester. The good news is that you can also head up there to spend the night. They have five available rooms, which includes the gorgeous honeymoon suite, and while you walk through the gardens you’ll be able to show the potential hubby the beautiful glass-walled chapel that has become synonymous with Bosjes.

Summer Safari

Head north on safari this Valentine’s day for some much needed R&R! There is something so magical about experiencing the animals and the beautiful scenery close to the Kruger National Park that I cannot help but include the Pezulu Tree House Lodge on the list. This lodge has the choice of individual rooms or Tree Houses with 180 degree views of the park, meaning that you can see the giraffes and zebras pass by while you take a relaxing bath. The trees form part of the houses, in true Tarzan style, and some houses even feature a jacuzzi bath.

Best of Both Worlds

Plettenberg Bay, and neighbouring Keurboomsrivier, is divided by an estuary. Surrounded by the Tsitsikamma mountains, the Emily Moon River Lodge sits on the estuary creating a relaxing space where couples can really spend some time together. The boutique hotel, with its quirky attitude and distinctly African air, and also features a restaurant, a beautifully decorated River House, as well as a wedding venue. What really makes it so enjoyable is that while you have the stunning river views, while the beach is just a stone’s throw away – best of both worlds!

We recently paid a visit to Plett and there are loads to do, so check it out!

Farm Stay

In my opinion, nothing changes the pace of us city dwellers like a working farm stay. One of my favourite spots is the Blue Cow Barn in Barrydale. Situated about 1 km outside of the small town of Barrydale, this working onion and carrot seed farm is the epitome of peace and quiet. The little cottages are perfectly cosy for two people and the farm is great for hiking, while the small art village of Barrydale is perfect for exploring on foot. They also have a small coffee shop on the farm which serves the most delicious chicken cheesecake!
