Ask anyone in Cape Town where to for a proper cut and colour, and chances are they’ll send you to Scar. This Kloof Street salon has made a name creating high fashion looks without destroying your hair; a go-to for edgy crops and mermaid shades, and so many of my blonde friends swear by them.
Their popularity unfortunately means that getting a last-minute appointment is about as easy as snatching a booking at The Test Kitchen. Not ideal if you need to fill that regrowth or give your platinum hair a nourishing treatment.
So enter Roots by Scar, a brand new maintenance bar that has opened in the Lifestyle On Kloof Center (so not at the actual Scar salon). Pop in for all your quick fixes like root colours, treatments and blow waves, and leave the cuts and full colour sessions to your normal stylist.
I popped in for a treatment and blow-dry. The salon is located on the second floor of the Lifestyle Center, done in a modern, simplistic style. Walking past the retail section, I was already charmed by their selection of salon brands, with many of my personal favourites like evo and Oribe stocked on the shelves.
At the basin they washed my hair with Davines (pronounced Da-Vie-Nes) and gave me the post insane scalp massage – one of those drool-a-little goodies. This was followed by a Davines 15 minute treatment before I got my hair styled using Kevin Murphy (OBSESSED with the fragrance). I left there with super soft, super wavy hair, just like a wanted.
I am currently rocking my natural hair colour so I didn’t need a colour touch up and unfortunately can’t comment on that part of their service. In general though Scar really knows their shit when it comes to hair colour so I would assume their sister-establishment will live up to legacy (also, Roots is first and foremost a colour maintenace bar). If you have a Scar hairdresser, I would ask them to recommend a specific stylist at Roots who they trust.
Roots has also launched their Roots by Scar App for bookings – available on the Apple or Google Play stores – which allows you to make easy bookings in advance. They will also store your colour formula so that it’s super easy for future technicians to match your colour perfectly.
And for the eco-warriors out there, you’ll be happy to know that Roots is aiming to become a completely cruelty-free salon. They are already only using and selling products from brands that claim to be cruelty free, and they are negotiating with Beauty without Cruelty South Africa to confirm that status.
Price wise, the root touch ups start at R390. Treatments begin at R110 and blow-waves at R150 (or get a rough dry for free as an add-on option). You can also purchase yearly packages that work out cheaper.
