I have a soft spot when it comes to beautifully crafted pastries – clearly my French heritage is still shining through big time. I don’t like wasting my time with dense, dry or day-old nonsense. I want it super fresh, flaky and perfect. Since moving to Stellenbosch I’ve been on the hunt for the perfect croissant, my ultimate early morning treat to go with my coffee. And like I said, if I’m going to indulge, it has be worth it. Then I discovered the Schoon Croissant Bar, tucked in a corner at the De Wet Center in the heart of Stellenbosch, and I am officially hooked.
Schoon, which you might know as Schoon de Companje, recently returned to Stellenbosch after a brief hiatus. Now they have three spots: the Manufactory at The Bird Precinct, where you’ll also find the Manufactory Café, Schoon Bright Street Café in Somerset West, and the Schoon Croissant & Coffee Bar.
The Schoon Croissant Bar is a tiny hole in the wall where you can go for a variety of amazing croissants, as well as a selection of other pastries. Aside from the plain, you can also get sweet treats like hazelnut chocolate, or ricotta and honey. Or go savoury with something like their ham gruyere with wholegrain mustard. I’m also planning to go back for the strawberry and yogurt cronut, and their rose croissant filled with rose crème pat and topped with white chocolate and pistachios. Drooling yet?
The options change frequently so you could probably try something fresh every time you pop by.
Schoon Croissant & Coffee Bar is a morning spot, open from 07:30 till 14:30, Monday to Saturday. You’ll find them in the De Wet Center, Stellenbosch.
