Most of us are officially back from our beach-side holidays. Instagram accounts are slowly moving away from the endless surge of blue water, white sand and golden bodies, traffic has started to resume its usual snails pace, and parking is once again a thing of myths. Sigh. Who else is already wishing for the next long weekend?
That being said, summer is far from over! We can still look forward to plenty of days next to the water, soaking up the long days and warm evenings. It’s also a perfect time to tweak your beauty routine to ensure you’re still getting plenty of sun protection, tackling some of the post-holiday damage, and just indulging in the fresh scents this season offers.
So which goodies will I be reaching for this season?
That summer body
The holidays might be over but there is still plenty of sun on the forecast so keep applying your SPF. I always make sure to cover my neck, chest, back and arms, which are constantly exposed through these hot months. You’re in good hands with the Bioderma Photoderm Max SPF50+ (R309,95 for 200ml, select pharmacies). It is colourless and doesn’t leave a sticky residue, plus it’s water-resistant which means it will survive sweat as well as a dip in the pool.
Next up, you can’t face this season without a solid deodorant. My favourite is still the Dove Go Fresh Anti-Perspirant (R19,99 for 50ml, supermarkets and leading retailers). Aside from being effective, it also has a refreshing cucumber and green tea scent that always makes me feel like I’ve just popped out of the shower.
I’m also a huge fan of scented moisturisers on my body and this season I’ve fallen hard for the Crabtree & Evelyn Gardeners Body Lotion (R650 for 300ml, crabtree-evelyn.co.za). It’s really nourishing without feeling heavy – great for dehydrated summer skin – and the scent almost makes me think of old school Eau de Cologne.
And finally, a new season calls for a fresh signature scent. Elizabeth Arden has once again charmed me with their new seasonal edition Sunflowers Summer Air (R445 for 100ml, elizabetharden.co.za). It’s bright, light and uncomplicated, with notes of citrus and apple supported by soft, sweet floral hints.
Face the sun
Summer can be hard on our skin. Salt and chlorine water dehydrates, sweat irritates and UV rays hammer away at our skin cells. So now that we’re back to our normal routines, it might be worthwhile investing in products that can help repair and restore.
As always my number 1 skincare rule is sunscreen. Personally I love the Dermalogica Solar Defence Booster SPF 50 (R789 for 50ml, dermalogica.co.za), which provides protection agains UVA and UVB damage, and has been pumped up with the anti-oxidant powers of Vitamin E and C. As a bonus, it leaves a beautiful silky finish – neither sticky nor chalky.

Don’t forget to also protect your lips from sun damage. A great buy is the Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Cream Lip Protectant Stick with SPF15 R235 for 3,7g, elizabetharden.co.za). They have also recently launched their limited edition Love Heals x Eight Hour collection, with packaging designed by internationally acclaimed muralist James Goldcrown. How pretty?
I also like to supplement my skincare routine with targeted serums. In summer that means ingredients that can tackle inflammation and overly-stressed skin cells. A brilliant choice is the Optiphi Ageless Active Gel (R1 537 for 30ml, optiphi.com), which works to calm irritated and sensitive skin. Vitamin B3 tackles the negative effects of sun exposure and free radicals while their Heat Shock Proteins help your skin to manage stress. The serum also helps to regulate sebum production (lawd knows we need it in this heat) and supports your skin’s barrier function so that it can keep moisture in. You can use it in the mornings and/or evenings.
And finally, I can’t survive summer without refreshing sprays. Thermal waters, setting sprays or refreshing toner spritzes are all brilliant when you need a quick pick-me-up. I’ve really been enjoying the Lush Breath of Fresh Air Toner Water (R95 for 100g, za.lush.com). It contains soothing Aloe Vera as well as a blend of ingredients to calm the skin and give it a vitamin boost. But mostly I love how it smells like the ocean and feels super fresh!
