My Super Simple Beach-Bronzed Summer Makeup Tutorial

So the summer holidays have come and gone and most of us are back at the office. But that doesn’t mean we have to let go of our beach-bronzed looks. This summer makeup look is my attempt to cling to that golden summer skin for as long as possible. I played with a lot of bronze and copper tones, and otherwise tried to keep things as simple as possible so that it is easy to recreate everyday.

And since we’ve officially moved into the hottest months, this look has been made to resist oil and sweat, and will hopefully last you all day (I’ve had success so far). The combination of primer, powder and setting spray will help to fix the look on your face and prevent a melted appearance by lunchtime.

Here’s what I used

Dr. Brandt Pores No More Pore Refiner Primer

R701,12 for 30ml, foschiniforbeauty.co.za

This primer is seriously impressive, helping to keep shine away and makeup in its place all day long. The velvety formula also helps to even out pores, creating a smoother canvas for your makeup.

Filorga Flash-Nude Pro-Perfection Tinted Fluid with SPF30

R520 for 30ml, filorgasouthafrica.co.za

Filorga has recently launched their first makeup range and beauties in the biz are all kinds of excited. This tinted fluid provides beautiful, natural-looking coverage that effectively evens out skin without creating that heavy mask-like effect. You can apply a light layer for sheer coverage that lets skin shine through, or build it up in layers for more intense coverage. The addition of SPF 30 makes it a great choice for summer.

Elizabeth Arden Stroke of Perfection Concealer in Light

R295, elizabetharden.co.za

This creamy concealer gives good, medium coverage with a silky finish. It has been formulated with polymers that help to brighten the under-eye area. It also contains Hyaluronic Acid to smooth out the skin, and Jojoba for moisture balance. I apply my concealer at the beginning of my routine and set it around the end, which gives it time to move around a bit.

Urban Decay Beached Bronzer in Bronzed

R435, urbandecay.co.za

This matte bronzer gives a really beautiful sun-kissed look. I apply bronzer using a broad brush, which gives a more natural blend. Apply it wherever the sun would natural hit, like the cheekbones, forehead, and the bridge of your nose.

Elizabeth Arden High Performance Powder Brush

R375, elizabetharden.co.za

This new kabuki brush from Elizabeth Arden has the softest soft bristles, and it works brilliantly to pick up powder and distribute it evenly across the skin. I like using broad brushes for bronzer, and they’re also ideal for applying setting powder.

Urban Decay Afterglow 8-Hour Powder Blush in Score

R410, urbandecay.co.za

This blush has a warm pink hue with a soft golden shimmer that makes me think of a tropical sunset. The pigment is intense so a little goes a long way, and it’s best to start with a light touch of colour and then building it until you’re happy.

Chanel Stylo Ombre et Contour in Nude Éclat

R560, select department stores

This can be used as an eyeshadow, liner or kohl. I think Nude Éclat is particularly gorgeous, adding a soft shimmer and light pink hue that makes your eyes pop without looking obvious. I would easily wear this on its own for a quick everyday look.

Yves Saint Laurent Full Metal Shadow in 5

R520, YSL Boutique, Sandton City

The YSL Metal Shadow is brilliant for that touch of drama. The consistency is amazing – like liquid metal – and super easy to work with. For this look I went with shade 5, which gave that deep copper glow of a summer sunset.

GOSH Metal Eyes waterproof eyeliner in Tiger Eye

R111, foschiniforbeauty.co.za

I am a huge fan of these GOSH waterproof liners. Tiger Eye gives a deep copper shimmer that I loved. I applied it along my upper and lower lashes, blending out for a more subtle and slightly smoky effect. Take note, once these dry they don’t budge so apply one eye at a time and work quickly to smudge it out with a firm shadow brush.

Gosh Prime ‘n Set Primer & Mattifying Setting Powder in Banana

R240, foschiniforbeauty.co.za

This is still one of my all time favourite setting powders. It has a super fine consistency so you don’t end up with a powdery, cakey finish. You get this beautiful airbrushed look. Plus the price is very nice.

L’Oréal Brow Artist Plumper in Medium/Dark

R170, leading retailers

This brow plumper also contains fibres that helps to give your brows a fuller appearance, and the small cone-shaped brush is fantastic for effortless, precise application. For added volume, I like to brush my brows down first, wait a few seconds and then brush it upwards. (As a side-note, I have had this product for a while and I suspect the packaging has changed slightly).

Lush Passion Fruit Lip Balm

R98, za.lush.com

To keep this look as simple as possible I opted for a lightly tinted balm. The Lush Passion Fruit lip balm has a soft copper hue to it that worked well with the rest of the colours, and it smells divine!

Urban Decay All Nighter Pollution Protection Makeup Setting Spray

R460 for 118ml, urbandecay.co.za

I am a big fan of the Urban Decay setting sprays. They deliver a super fine mist, and they’ve been designed to temperature-control your makeup so that it doesn’t crack during the day. This variant has also been formulated to protect your skin against damaging environmental pollution, which is always a bonus.

Lancôme Monsieur Big Waterproof

R360, select department stores

I prefer waterproof mascara during summer, which stays in place even when I feel like the rest of my face is melting. This one from Lancôme is wonderful! The fluffy brush distributes an even coat of mascara and really fans out the lashes, and the pitch black colour packs a punch. And so far it has survived some seriously hot days.
