The nominees for the 2019 Grammys have been unveiled; and just when we thought we were in for some big surprises, there was a rat race in all the big categories. Here are the juicy details you should know about our favourite Music Awards ceremony!

We welcome you, The One Nod Club!

Taylor Swift settled for one nomination this year, even though Reputation was one of the biggest albums of this year’s Billboard charts. Her accustomed Grammy glory is taking the backseat this year. The Grammys will also be a night devoid of Sam Smith, who received no nominations, and will probably be sitting at home with his past statuettes watching Drake, Post Malone, Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper, Brandi Carlile and Childish Gambino fight it out for Record of the Year.

What do Justin Timberlake and Nicki Minaj have in common? Just one nomination at the Grammys between them. And that one nod went to Timberlake’s Best Pop Duo for his hit Say Something.  Our love-to-hate-him man himself, Kanye West only scored one nomination at the Grammys this year for Producer of the Year.

Looks like the Breakfast Club can take a hike, because the One Nod Club is in full swing!

Who run the Grammys? LADIES!

Despite the fact that Kendrick Lamar and Drake received the most nominations this year, the Album of the Year and Best New Artist categories were dominated by women! Cardi B, Musgraves, Janelle Monae, Jorja Smith are all in the All Girls Club. Brandi Carlile is in this club as well with six nominations!

Also joining them in the club is 4 Non Blondes leader Linda Perry, who bagged a nomination in the Non-Classical Producer of the Year category. For the first time in 16 years, Perry has had a breakthrough for women in this particular category.

The girl power is going even stronger, with Alicia Keys hosting the 61st Annual Grammy Awards!

Nice to meet you, H.E.R

The 21 year old R&B singer is standing next to artists like Lady Gaga and Cardi B, with both having received five nominations each. H.E.R. was nominated for Album of the Year, Best R&B album, Best R&B Song, Best R&B Performance and Best New Artist. Chloe x Halle, Luke Combs and Greta Van Fleet are a few noteworthy nominees in the Best New Artist Category; and we will see if having everything revealed (H.E.R) is for the best!

It’s BETTER NOW for the Red Hot Chilli Peppers

Post Malone will join forces with rock band Red Hot Chilli Peppers for a performance at the 61st Grammy Awards. The Beerbongs & Bentleys musician  was nominated for Album of the Year, Record of the Year, Best Rap/Sung Performance and Best Solo Performance, but the Peppers have no nominations, nor are they promoting a new release. And a performance with the Rockstar himself is their only ticket into the 2019 Grammys. You can also look forward to performances from Cardi B, Camila Cabello, Shawn Mendes and Brandi Carlile.

Local is…. At the Grammys!

Local is lekker and that’s why my favourite nomination at this year’s Grammy Awards is for the Soweto Gospel Choir in the World Music Album category, alongside artists like Bombino, Fatoumata, Seun Kuti and Egypt 80. Let’s hold our thumbs that they bring back yet another Grammy to the rainbow nation!

The nominations are in. Backstreet’s back after 17 years. Bexa Rexha needs a designer and Lil Wayne gets the cold shoulder. The 61st Grammy Awards will take place on Sunday, 10th of February 2019. And you can watch it on E! Entertainment (Dstv 124) at 23:00.

The VaaIie girl with a laugh better than the joke itself. If you’ve lost me in the crowd, look for the red hat. Or the shoulder pads. Or the floral-patterned blazer. I’ve got a winner of a party trick, just give me a shot of tequila and a raw egg, and if you’re not sure how to start the conversation, don’t worry. I’ve got you covered.
