If you love local design and good food, then you have to go check out The Yard, the new concept store and eatery that opens at The Silo District this week.
The new space is the brainchild of dynamic retailer and hospitality visionary, Abigail Bisogno (from Spice Route), and her business partner, restaurateur, GP Singh. Although the two come from vastly different cultures – Bisogno was raised in the Cape Winelands and Singh hails from the Punjab in India – they share a combined love for fusion and collaboration, which they wanted to express in the formation of The Yard.
“GP and I share a vision and passion for Euro-Asian cuisine that seeks to unify Asia-Indian-European flavours,” she explains. “We intend to make our new space in the Silo District the destination where this type of food and our unique brand of retail can be experienced and enjoyed!”
Named for the surrounding dockyards and located within view of the tugboat moorings and harbour, The Yard is an airy, industrial-meets-modern space. To one end you’ll find an open plan kitchen and restaurant, and on the other side a shop stocked with the most tempting collection of local pieces. Stock up on tasty treats like chocolates, home-made pasta, preserves, charcuterie and fine cheese, or buy homewear, clothing, crockery or stationary, all while sipping on some Rosetta Roastery coffee (yessss!).
The deli also incorporates a food-on-the-go section with an array of smoothies, and house-made iced teas and flavoured water. It’s ideal for grabbing a quick cuppa, a bite at lunchtime, or powering up after a workout (since The Yard is located directly below the Virgin Active Collection Silo District).
Alongside the deli and coffee bar is a fresh salad and warm buffet section which changes daily. The buffet is located adjacent the main bar, where you can settle along the marble and copper bar for after-work drinks and snacks.
The restaurant will offer fine dining for lunch and dinner, drawing from Mediterranean, Middle Eastern, Oriental and Indian influences. I was most excited about the Mediterranean platters piled with delicious bites. I also tried the gnocci, which was simple and satisfying, and the lamb, which was equally tasty.
I highly recommend you pop in for some light (or heavy) shopping – hello Christmas gifts! – and a taster of the menu. It’s right around the corner from the Zeitz Mocaa Museum and adjacent to the V&A Waterfront.
