I freakin’ love BoJack Horseman. It’s not even a mild obsession, I am 100% without a doubt way beyond obsessed. A friend of mine recently pointed out to me that I had a great way of relating nearly everything that happens to us back to something that happened in BoJack Horseman. Safe to say that I finally found my calling and hence this article was born.
And I have to give a shoutout to my brother who got me hooked on the show. I see you.
The very last season of BoJack Horseman has just started streaming on Netflix so be sure to check it out! The second half of the season premieres early next year.
BoJack Horseman, I see you – BH
To me, this is such a gut-punch quote and so applicable to nearly every single situation, because what would any of us like more than to just be seen. As BoJack’s mother, Beatrice, lays dying she tells him that she sees him and while he accepts it as an acknowledgement of him as a person, he realises it is only her illness speaking.
Just pretend you are happy, and eventually, you’ll forget you’re pretending – BH
This is 100% my office mantra! As we all know an office environment calls for a lot of pretending and eventually you just get over it and you find another type of happiness. This little piece of wisdom BoJack gives to Diane as ‘the secret to happiness’.
Am I doing it wrong? Am I doing drugs wrong? – DN
I have a definite love/hate relationship with Diane but in this instance she is spot on! I don’t do well with with drugs and the number of times that I’ve had this exact thought is insane – and yes, I’m still not sure if I’ve ever done it the right way.
Nobody completes anybody. That is not a real thing. – BH
Damn, this is such a hard lesson to learn! We so often search for completion in others, and we forget that we can only find it within ourselves, and only when we find it can we be together with someone else. BoJack tries and explain this to Tanisha in a bathroom stall on her wedding day.
He’s so stupid he doesn’t realize how miserable he should be. – BH
Have you ever been going through something so intense and you just wish you could be one of those people oblivious to whatever life throws at you? Me too – and often! It just seems that people who do not overthink things and do not feel things as intensely live a much more unburdened life.
Everything is the worst. – BH
Are you an exercise bargainer? I am! Two minutes into an exercise I try and bargain with myself; when can I rest, how much exercise do you actually need (Googling that ASAP for the millionth time), is it better to go fast for a short time or slower for a longer time… Everything is the worst!
Idea for a new app: an undo button that can undo long amounts of time. Three months. A year. A life. – DN
Oh, my word, yes! If there is an undo button for all the self-destructive stuff we do daily, can someone please point it out to me already?! So often my social anxiety gets the better of me and I run away from interaction only to later think of all the things I could have said. So yes, Diane, great idea!
When you look at someone through rose-coloured glasses, all the red flags just look like flags. – WP
Come on, girls, we definitely all go through this! You are dating this guy and before you know it, you find yourself defending his shitty behaviour to your friends and family. This is, of course, a slippery slope and Wanda realises that no matter how she spins it BoJack has a lot of red flags.
I didn’t do anything wrong, because I can’t do anything wrong because we’re all just products of our environment, bouncing around like marbles in the game of Hungry, Hungry Hippos that is our random and cruel universe. – BH
Not taking responsibility for all the shitty things he does is probably the most BoJack-thing there is. We just love blaming someone or something else, don’t we? And then we adore living in this pseudo-blameless universe where everything just spills over us but nothing sticks. I just tried to match my rant to BoJack’s.
Look, for a lot of people, life is just one long hard kick in the urethra. – BH
Yes. There is not much more to say. Sometimes you’re up and sometimes you’re down but what I’ve learned is that there are always people happier than me and people sadder at that moment than I am. Best is just to focus on not freaking out, and riding that wave.
These are just a few of my favourites. I’ve included some extra BoJack pearls of wisdom below just for that addition of existential dread.
It’s so cruel to let people love you. All you’re doing is promising you’ll one day break their hearts. – CPB
There is no shame in dying for nothing. That’s why most people die. – Herb’s funeral
Don’t look at me. I’m well-adjusted. – BH
Laura! Clear our my schedule! I have to push a boulder up a hill and then have it roll over me time and time again with no regard for my well-being! – PC
I need to go take a shower so I can’t tell if I’m crying or not. – BH
Not understanding that you’re a horrible person doesn’t make you less of a horrible person. – BH
One day, you’re gonna look around and you’re going to realize that everybody loves you, but nobody likes you. And that is the loneliest feeling in the world. – BH
We’re just two lonely people trying to hate ourselves a little less. – BH
Did you go to work today? I was gonna, but then I remembered that is garbage. So why bother doing anything? – BH
The key to being happy is not a search for meaning. It’s to just keep yourself busy with unimportant nonsense, and eventually, you’ll be dead. – MPB
Life is a series of closing doors, isn’t it? – BH
You’re BoJack Horseman. There’s no cure for that. – Beatrice
Settle. Because otherwise you’re just gonna get older and harder, and more alone. – BH
He’s probably just razzin’ ya. But he’s a good dog. All bark, no bite. Oh, sorry! That’s a labrador expression. I guess in human terms it would be: he’s all talk, no shooting you with an assault rifle. – MPB
You are all the things that are wrong with you. – TC
Do you ever get the feeling that to know you more is to love you less? – HH
