Vitamin C is one of my favourite skincare ingredients, with the ability to boost collagen and elastin production, fight free-radical damage, target pigmentation and brighten your skin.
Use it during the evening to firm your skin, or during the day for added UV protection. Either way, it’s worth working it into your routine somewhere.
When choosing a vitamin C serum, you ideally want one containing L-Ascorbic Acid – the purest form. Vitamin C serums should also ALWAYS be packaged in airless, lightless packaging to protect the active ingredient.
Here are three new serums I’m loving at the moment.
Clinique Fresh Pressed Daily Booster with Pure Vitamin C 10%
R855 for a 4 week supply, clinique.co.za
Vitamin C is notoriously unstable and it starts to degrade when exposed to oxygen and light. You get stabilized forms but they are expensive to produce – pushing up the price of the product.
Clinique has come up with a clever answer to this problem. Their Fresh Pressed Daily Booster comes in four tubes – each meant to last you a week. This means you get a high dose of pure vitamin C (ascorbic acid) while it is still fresh and potent.
The Daily Booster contains 10% ascorbic acid that will boost radiance and protect your skin against environmental damage. It also contains salicylic acid to boost cell renewal; sucrose, algae extract and caffeine to soothe your skin; and blend of antioxidants to further protect your skin.

Shake the tube for about 16 seconds and then press down on the back bubble to dispense the serum. They say you should use 2 drops but I found one good squeeze dispensed more than enough product for my face, neck and decollete. You can use it morning and night before your moisturizer.
I used the product for two weeks and found my skin looked beautifully radiant. I would be keen to see the results after a full month.
Optiphi Protecting Revitalizer
R1 845 for 40ml, optiphi.com
Optiphi is a great choice for effective, highly active skincare and because the products are local you get them at a fairly reasonable price.
This serum has been developed specifically to protect your skin cells against the effect of sun damage and early aging.
It contains vitamin C to target pigmentation and to protect your elastin fibers (which keep your skin firm) alongside the natural antioxidant Thermus Thermophilus Ferment, Teprenone to protect your cells, and retinol.

The retinol in Optiphi’s products is released slowly through their Time Controlled Diffusion Technology. The active is protected by a porous sphere and is continuously delivered directly onto the skin.
The controlled, slow release means your skin absorbs the retinol more slowly, reducing the risk of irritation. When the retinol is released into the skin, the porous spheres meanwhile remain on the surface, forming a protective barrier. Very clever.
You can use this serum in the mornings and evenings, but it is especially ideal for daytime use to protect your skin cells.
La Prairie White Caviar Illuminating Pearl Infusion
R8 200, select Edgars stores
Yes, this price point took my breath away too, but I wanted to include this product because the skincare innovation is pretty exciting. The Pearl Infusion targets melanin-induced spots as well as redness and dullness with a stable, oil-soluble form of Vitamin C and Diglucosyl Gallic Acid (DGA).
Dark spots on your skin are mainly cased by sun damage. UV light triggers melanocyte cells to start making the brown pigment melanin, which shows up on your skin as spots.
DGA addresses dark spots by regulating that master switch of melanin production, and by limiting the spread of melanin through your skin. It also works as an anti-irritant to counter the damage that stress, pollutants and free radicals cause. By soothing irritation it further counters redness in the skin.

Meanwhile the stabilized Vitamin C – protected by the pearl formula – is freshly released with each application, and helps to reduce sun spots and protect the skin against damage.
And finally the shell of the caviar pearls forms a shield on the skin, defending it from environmental pollution. The capsule is made of different polysaccharides (with antioxidant and skin replenishing properties), one of which forms a “second skin” that protects while still allowing active ingredients to penetrate.
You will use this morning and/ or evening before your moisturizer. I have been using it for two weeks and I really feel that my skin is more luminous, nourished and even.
