*Insecure spoilers

There is nothing that I love more than a confident, influential, successful and self-assured woman. Jo-Issa Rae Diop, who goes by Issa Rae, is exactly that. Like Lizzo, I look up to her for being unapologetically herself while dominating a male-dominated industry. She is extremely talented in her pursuits, which include acting, writing and producing, and is at the same 100% relatable.

Issa is well-known for her award-winning web series, The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl, which follows the life of an awkward black girl named ”J” and HBO’s television series, Insecure, which she created, starred in, and produced. I discovered Insecure last year on Showmax and instantly became hooked on Issa who plays a version of herself as an (awkward) black girl living in LA. If you are one of the very few people who haven’t watched it yet, get ready for a binge-watching session. The entire cast is talented, the script well-written, and the entire show’s themes are incredibly relatable and realistic.
Check out some of my favourite moments from Insecure that had me saying “that’s so me” and accurately captured what real life is like for most of us during the 3 major stages of living that single life:

Do you want your man or not?

Have you ever been in a relationship for so long that things start to become a little too complacent and you start to wonder what you’re missing out on? I’ve been there, Issa’s been there, and I’m pretty sure you have too. Be like Issa and let that man go while you sing to yourself in the mirror and figure your sh*t out: “Do you want your man or not? Do you know your plans or not? You gon’ go back home or not? You gon’ claim your throne or not? Is you Khaleesi or that other b*tch who’s name I don’t remember…”

Go for it, go for it, go! Ho for it, ho for it, ho!

So, you broke up with your man and now you’re back on the dating scene but 5 minutes in you realise you have absolutely no clue how to “ho” anymore. Sounds familiar right? I’m currently at that stage and it is H.A.R.D. Issa knows too and she’s literally me before, during, and after I go out on the town to find a man. Can someone please teach me how to flirt?

Don’t be pressed.

You finally meet someone, but they don’t reply to your messages straight away. You get a notification that makes you grab at your phone with much anticipation and excitement but it’s just a Facebook notification saying your mom tagged you in another cat video. You tell yourself “be cool” because you’re definitely not hung up on the guy you met two days ago. Issa is there with you, girl, telling herself that she’s not pressed because you definitely don’t want to seem too thirsty.
If you can relate to everything I just said, you should definitely watch Insecure if you haven’t yet. And if you have, you will be extremely excited to know that Season 4 is on the way! So get ready, but also we’re not pressed. Check out the trailer below:
